James C. Nicola, Artistic Director of New York Theatre Workshop (NYTW), discusses the innovative Broadway shows (Rent, Hadestown, What the Constitution Means to Me, among others) that began at NYTW and reshaped the field. He'll also reflect on NYTW's fruitful 29-year partnership with Dartmouth and how the pandemic has affected the company's work. Dartmouth Dance Ensemble Director and Broadway choreographer John Heginbotham hosts with help from recent Dartmouth graduate Sam West '20. Please feel free to submit your own questions for James in the live YouTube chat!
About James C. Nicola and New York Theatre Workshop
For over thirty years, James C. Nicola has helmed NYTW with the goal of impacting the field of theater and bringing new work to mainstream stages. NYTW supports the visionary work of artists through residencies, fellowships and workshops—laboratories of experimentation. With a commitment to pushing aesthetic boundaries and amplifying new voices, NYTW asks what it means to be alive today and inspires audiences' new perspectives and understandings.
Every August, the company brings their work to Dartmouth for a three-week residency to develop and perform new works-in-progress by some of today's most innovative professional playwrights and directors. Recent Dartmouth residency projects have included We Live In Cairo, currently in production at Boston's American Repertory Theater, and Hadestown, which won eight 2019 Tony awards for its current Broadway production.
