The Medium, a 59-minute opera in English by the fabled composer Gian Carlo Menotti will be presented virtually in a streamed production through a collaboration with Dartmouth Department of Music and the Hop. This year-long project features the talents of Dartmouth students who are members of Dartmouth Opera Lab, an initiative that nurtures and develops the vocal and dramatic abilities of students who wish to explore and expand their musical, vocal and dramatic interests.

Particularly challenging this year, The Medium vocal track was created remotely across many states including Massachusetts, West Virginia, North Carolina and New Hampshire. Creating and coordinating intricate video elements added yet another layer of complexity to this event as the cast will be performing from many locations, apartments, dorm rooms and homes, and will be using set-elements that are identical in all locations in an effort to create a cohesive environment. Performers will be provided direction in creating their characters live, and then the scenes will be recorded and edited together, married to the audio/vocal tracks and rendered into black and white with old-silent-movie effects.

Led by Visiting Artists Mezzo Soprano Ana Mora of the New England Conservatory, and Soprano Isabelle Brick, '20, a recent Dartmouth and Opera Lab graduate, the talented Dartmouth student company will explore the lyrical, lurid world of Madame Flora, a spurious Medium who preys on the grief of parents who have lost their children to the jaws of Death, only to find that her meddling with things secret and dangerous calls up unexpected horrors.
