Metropolis

Set in the year 2026, society has been divided into two rigid groups: one of rich planners or thinkers, who live in luxury on the surface of Earth in the lush skyscrapers; the other of workers, who live underground, toiling to sustain the lives of the privileged up above. Both halves are ignorant of each other. It is only when Freder Fredersen, the son of the rich city master, meets the saintly Maria from below, that he descends and sees the lives and machines that keep his society afloat.
Determined to be the "Mediator" that Maria prophesizes to the workers, Freder must fight against lies and deception to unite the "head" of his world with the "hands" down below. Full of Biblical references and religious allegory, Metropolis fixed for the rest of the century the image of a futuristic city as a hell of scientific progress and human despair, and inspired countless narratives from Star Wars to Blade Runner.
