Daniel Craig's final performance as a soulful, ass-kicking 007 powers a terrific movie: an up-to-the-minute, down-to-the-wire James Bond thriller with a satisfying neo-classical edge.
21/22 Hop Film
Our favorite agent 007 is back again, and for the last time. Director Cary Joji Fukunaga (True Detective) isn't much concerned with reinventing Bond as he is with reshaping the world around him and exploring the internal landscape of a man still traumatized by loss. There's the usual cast of cool gadgets, colorful villains, femme fatales and a welcome undercurrent of humor, the latter courtesy of script co-writer Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag, Killing Eve). Oscar winner Rami Malek (Bohemian Rhapsody), Ana de Armas, Ben Whishaw, Léa Seydoux, Christoph Waltz, Ralph Fiennes, Naomie Harris and Rory Kinnear lend all-star support while Billie Eilish delivers the iconic theme song.
The result is a breathtakingly gorgeous, sometimes thrilling, well-acted and suitably profound sendoff to Daniel Craig in all his ice-blue-eyed, tightly wound, gritty gravitas—a Bond who seemed much more of this world than, say Roger Moore's 007, a Bond who bled when he was cut and bruised when he was beaten, a Bond who grieved deeply for those he lost, a Bond who will be a very, very tough act to follow. Ready the martini, tissues and adrenaline—you'll need all three. D: Cary Joji Fukunaga, USA, 2021, CC
