The Odyssey
The Odyssey
Stellar performances by Matt Damon and an A-list ensemble make Christopher Nolan's blockbuster adaptation of Homer's epic an unmissable cinematic event.
Matt Damon gives the performance of his career as Odysseus, the trickster whose equine gift won the Trojan war for the Greeks after ten years of battle and siege. Homer's epic poem follows our hero's ten-year journey home, as the gods, angered by his duplicity and ingratitude, send storms and monsters his way. Only Athena (Zendaya) seems to offer guidance rather than grievances.
Meanwhile, back home his wife (Anne Hathaway), son (Tom Holland) and loyal servant (John Leguizamo) must negotiate with dozens of unwelcome suitors, led by the scheming Antinous (Robert Pattinson). Lupita N'yongo, Elliot Page, Benny Safdie, Jon Bernthal, Charlize Theron and Samantha Morton round out the A-list cast of Trojan war characters who haunt Odysseus and enchantresses who stand between him and home.
Rather than view Odysseus's hubris as boastful and ungrateful, Nolan positions the Greek warrior's fatal flaw as his failure to surrender to forces beyond his control and tendency to shoulder too much responsibility. The result is a realist yet majestic interpretation of the classic myth, which swells with primal human feeling, thrilling action, meticulous scoring and dazzling visuals. The Odyssey lives up to the "epic" moniker in what may be the cinema event of the decade.
