23/24 Hop Film

Out of Darkness | Official Trailer | Bleecker Street

Forty-five thousand years ago, a small boat reaches the shore of an inhospitable landscape. Six people have struggled across the narrow sea in hopes of finding a new home. When night falls, hope turns to terror as an unseen enemy threatens their clan. When 11-year-old Heron suddenly vanishes into the night, the tribe ventures into the forest to find him. Director Andrew Cumming pairs a minimalist narrative with the maximum of atmosphere. The setting may be prehistoric, but there's nothing primitive about the filmmaking, which molds mostly natural light and an unusually rich soundscape into something both elemental and hostile. It's an impressively credible and gnarly journey back in time.
