Parthenope
Parthenope
This event occurred as part of the 24/25 Hop Film season. This is an archived view.
Directed by Paolo Sorrentino, this decadent drama starring Gary Oldman offers an exquisite treatise on desire and cinematic beauty.
Parthenope, born in the sea of Naples in 1950, searches for happiness over the long summers of her youth, falling in love with her home city and its many memorable characters. Celeste Dalla Porta delivers a beguiling performance as the film's eponymous subject, a woman of such stunning beauty that people stop and stare. Among the oglers is aging American writer John Cheever, played by legendary actor Gary Oldman (Slow Horses, The Darkest Hour).
Like his previous film The Hand of God, Paolo Sorrentino's feast for the senses recaptures the feeling of youthful, summer freedom while refusing to shy away from the uncertainties of young adulthood. This exquisite treatise on cinematic beauty is not a coming-of-age story so much as a film about coming into oneself.
