Benedict Cumberbatch stars as a domineering, magnetic rancher in 1920s Montana in Jane Campion's newest melodrama.
Adapting Thomas Savage's 1967 cult novel, Jane Campion orchestrates a riveting Greek tragedy set in early 20th-century across a visually striking stretch of Montana. Two cattle rancher brothers—precocious roughneck Phil (Benedict Cumberbatch, in one of his most commanding roles) and simple, straight-arrow George (Jesse Plemons)—blow into the life of widowed innkeeper Rose (Kirsten Dunst) and her sensitive son Peter. George immediately falls for Rose, while Phil's cruelty alienates them both and this tense dynamic grows even more poisonous when George proposes. What follows is a powerful drama that portrays the ruthlessness of our world against the weak and the vulnerable, delivered with all the compassion, irony, and splendor we've come to expect from one of the truly visionary filmmakers of our time.
