Although composers from Tchaikovsky to Bernstein have adapted Shakespeare's tragic tale of young love,  Sergei Prokofiev's 1934 ballet score stands out as a vibrant work of bright-eyed musical ingenuity. Despite a creative process of frustration, repression and tragedy much befitting its Shakespearean subject, the score is considered the crowning achievement of Prokofiev's career.

The DSO performed Romeo and Juliet as part of an ambitious two-evening collaboration with the Coast Jazz Orchestra of Shakespeared-themed music, including Coast Director Taylor Ho Bynum's new Shakespeare-based jazz oratorio The Temp and Mr. Prosper.
