Winter 2023

Shadow (Back To Back Pictures | Official Trailer)

What is normal? How do we make decisions that best serve a civic society? How can we save the world? At a town hall meeting, a group of activists discuss these questions, weaving a narrative through human rights, sexual politics and the projected dominance of artificial intelligence. Adapted from the award-winning stage play THE SHADOW WHOSE PREY THE HUNTER BECOMES, this film event is a sly theatrical revelation reminding us that none of us are self-sufficient and all of us are responsible.

SHADOW was produced by Australia's internationally acclaimed Back to Back Theatre, a company with an ensemble of actors with disabilities at its core. Their work aims to question the assumptions we hold about theater, ourselves and others. The film makes its way to the Hop following a screening at the world-renowned theater festival Under The Radar, where the play was a big hit in 2020.

The film runs for 56 minutes, and is followed by a conversation with the artists.

Over the last 30 years, Back to Back Theatre has made a body of work that questions the assumptions of what is possible in theatre, but also the assumptions we hold about ourselves and others. As an ongoing dialogue with audiences, each new project is an investigation seeking answers to questions raised in previous works. Their attention lies with design, light and sound. The stories they pursue weave the personal, the political and the cosmic.

Seeking to make a body of work that exists in repertoire across time, the company tours extensively locally, nationally and internationally to the world's leading festivals and cultural institutions. Over the last decade, Back to Back Theatre has presented 48 national and 74 international seasons of its theatre works, receiving 18 national and international awards including Performance Studies International's Artist-Scholar-Activist Award, a Helpmann Award for Best Australian Work, an Edinburgh International Festival Herald Angel Critics' Award, a Green Room Award for Best Ensemble and the 2022 International Ibsen Award. Back to Back Theatre is based in Geelong, Australia.
