Director Kelly Reichardt, a singular voice in American cinema, reteams with frequent collaborator Michelle Williams for an art-school comedy.
Hop Film Now
Kelly Reichardt's new light-touch comedy focuses on the dogged accomplishments and petty annoyances of plodding away at your craft day in and day out. When not doing admin work at the Portland art school she attended, Lizzie (Michelle Williams) steals spare moments away in her basement studio. Frocked invariably in shapeless earth tones, she meticulously molds and angles the limbs of her colorful clay creations in preparation for a gallery exhibition. Reichardt's film is interested in the minutiae of this world—the social dynamics, the economics, the saving graces and, especially, artmaking as an extension of life, to some as quotidian as eating and sleeping, in which much of the labor happens out of sight of an adoring audience.
