Lydia Tár (Cate Blanchett) is the first chief female conductor of the Berlin Symphony Orchestra and, according to her public relations team, the twentieth-century's foremost interpreter of classical music. Her image is as tightly controlled as her orchestra, but, as she prepares to record a career-defining work by Gustav Mahler, her grip on both her professional and personal life begins to slip.
