Steven Spielberg's "West Side Story" | Official Trailer | 20th Century Studios

The legendary filmmaker's remake of the beloved 1957 stage musical is a charismatic showcase for everything he does best on the big screen. Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winner Tony Kushner wrote the screenplay and the pair stayed loyal to the play while also making notable changes in a way that makes it fresh and vibrant. Set in 1950s New York, two teenagers from different backgrounds fall in love in the midst of a rivalry between street gangs. As star-crossed lovers, Ansel Elgort (Baby Driver) and newcomer Rachel Zegler lead a terrifically talented ensemble, including original cast member Rita Moreno. This dynamite blend of old-school musical showmanship and modern sensibilities reminds us that great stories never will die. D: Steven Spielberg, US, 2021

"This film is probably the most daunting of my career. West Side Story is arguably the greatest score ever written in the theater, and that's not lost on any of us. It's very intimidating to take a masterpiece and make it through different eyes and different sensibilities without compromising the integrity of what is generally considered the greatest music ever written for the theater. But I believe that great stories should be told over and over again, in part to reflect different perspectives and moments in time into the work."
