WHITE LIE Trailer | TIFF 2019

This gripping psychological thriller follows Katie (Kacey Rohl), an Ontario college student doing everything she can to convince the world that she has cancer, including running a social media fundraising campaign to help pay for a new experimental treatment. As her plight draws more and more attention, elements of Katie's story start to fall apart as she is faced with questions about the specifics of her disease and where the money donated to her is really going. Anchored by an incredibly deep and nuanced performance from Rohl, White Lie is compelling and difficult to look away from. And in the age of social media, when this kind of online fraud is becoming more and more common, this film serves as a cautionary tale about the facades we construct online. Most importantly, White Lie is a sensitive portrait of its very troubled protagonist, remaining sympathetic to her even as it shows us the desperate lengths she will go to keep her secret. D: Calvin Thomas and Yonah Lewis, Canada, 2019, 1h36m.
