Equal parts history, psychology and psychedelia, this entertaining portrait takes us on an intoxicating journey into the life of the Dutch graphic artist (1898-1972). Exuberant voice-over by British actor Stephen Fry is paired with Escher's woodcuts, lithographs and other prints in both original and playfully daring forms (thanks to a team of graphic designers and animators). The dazzling result is that rare biopic that finds ways to show us, visually, how his style evolved and the principles behind that evolution; it's like an art book come to life. Years ahead of his time, Escher was an artist who played tricks on your eye to knock open the doors of perception. From Pink Floyd to Inception, his ingenious notions and reality-bending preoccupations are still celebrated today. D: Robin Lutz, Netherlands, 2019, some subtitled, 1h21m
