Tori and Lokita
Tori and Lokita
This event occurred as part of the 22/23 Hop Film season. This is an archived view.
A young boy and an adolescent girl who have traveled alone from Africa pit their invincible friendship against the difficult conditions of their exile in Belgium.
Tori (Pablo Schils) and Lokita (Joely Mbundu) have fled religious violence in Africa. Pretending to Belgian authorities they are brother and sister to increase their asylum chances, their lie becomes the truth, as they fiercely protect each other while navigating a host of dangers. For 30 years, Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne, eight-time prize winners at Cannes, have sustained and revitalized the cinematic tradition of humanistic, politically engaged neorealist filmmaking. Here, with rigor and not a trace of sentimentality, the Dardennes portray a society that ruthlessly exploits children while, simultaneously, inspiring us with the indisputable power of unconditional love. Through their careful direction and the brilliant lead performances, we begin to believe that love can conquer all. (Belgium, subtitled, 2022, 89m) Courtesy of Sideshow
This may be the Dardennes’ most emotionally engaging film in a while — a tragedy told with utter clarity, centered on protagonists entirely deserving of our sympathy
