Silent movie double feature! The beloved children's short film, followed by the horror classic starring Lon Chaney, both with live organ accompaniment.
The Red Balloon at 7 pm
Rarely has the spirit of childhood been evoked as exquisitely as in this Academy Award-winning cinematic fable, a fantasy with the texture of reality. On the streets of 1950s Paris, a young boy is launched on a miraculous adventure when he's playfully pursued by a shiny red balloon that seems to have a mind of its own. D: Albert Lamorisse, France, 1956, 34m
The Phantom of the Opera at 7:45 pm
A forerunner of the American horror film, and one of the most lavish productions of the silent cinema era, this mesmerizing blend of romance and mystery stars Lon Chaney in the title role. Making his home in the Paris Opera House, the Phantom falls for the ingénue Christine Daae, embarking on a campaign of murder and mayhem in an attempt to make her a star. The film remains most famous for Chaney's ghastly, self-devised make-up, which was kept a studio secret until the film's premiere. D: Rupert Julian, US, 1925, 1h33m
With live accompaniment by organist Peter Krasinski. Programmed in collaboration with the Department of Film & Media Studies, the Tucker Center and the Church of Christ at Dartmouth
