This event occurred as part of the 25/26 Hop Film season. This is an archived view.
A conspiracy-obsessed beekeeper (Jesse Plemons) kidnaps a Big Pharma CEO (Emma Stone) he suspects is an alien in Yorgos Lanthimos's dark satire.
Yorgos Lanthimos's (Poor Things, The Favourite) newest is an absurdist black comedy and psychological thriller centered on paranoia, class resentment and delusional belief systems.
Teddy (Jesse Plemons) is a conspiracy-obsessed beekeeper who believes the world's environmental collapse and societal decay are orchestrated by extraterrestrial invaders disguised as corporate elites. Convinced that Big Pharma CEO Michelle Fuller (Emma Stone) is one such alien, Teddy recruits his nervous cousin Donny (Aidan Delbis) to kidnap her and "save humanity."
Like much of Lanthimos's work, Bugonia oscillates between horror, satire and bizarre humor. It skewers conspiracy culture, corporate greed and male paranoia while maintaining an ambiguous tension over whether Michelle is truly human. Lanthimos also keeps audiences uncertain whether Teddy is a crusader or a delusional extremist, forcing viewers to question the difference between madness and resistance.
Ultimately, Bugonia is an acerbic, claustrophobic and wickedly funny meditation on obsession, power and the despair of a collapsing world—told through the deranged logic of a man who may have found the perfect enemy in the wrong person.
