No Chains, No Masters
No Chains, No Masters
An enslaved father and daughter battle for freedom at all costs in this historical drama set in 1700s Mauritius. Discussion follows.
Set in French-ruled Mauritius in the mid-1700s, this historical drama lays bare the brutal treatment of enslaved Africans working on its sugar plantations. Unlike her father Massamba (Ibrahima Mbaye), who has grown disillusioned by years of oppression, 16-year-old Mati dreams of freedom and a life beyond the plantation. One night she makes a daring escape to a remote part of the island, triggering a ruthless pursuit. Dreading the consequences of her capture, her father flees as well to find her before the merciless slave catcher (Camille Cottin) does.
Their journey together becomes a desperate fight for survival amid the island's dense jungle and a final, irreversible break from the colonial system that has defined their lives. Featuring strong performances and vivid cinematography that depict the harsh conditions and violence of the era, No Chains epitomizes the universal human desire for liberation and dignity.
