The Playboy of the Western World
The Playboy of the Western World
Nicola Coughlan ('Bridgerton') and Siobhán McSweeney ('Derry Girls') join forces in this acclaimed Irish comedy about youth and self-discovery.
Pegeen Flaherty (Coughlin) has a sharp tongue, is frustrated with village life, works in a pub full of men, and yearns for something exciting to happen. She gets what she wished for when, on a normal day, a young man walks into her pub claiming that he's killed his father. Instead of being shunned, the killer Christy Mahon becomes a local hero, winning hearts and quickly embedding (emphasis on bedding) himself into village life. That is until a second man unexpectedly arrives on the scene…
Set in a remote Irish village, John Millington Synge's riveting story of youth and self-discovery was, at the time of its 1907 premiere, heavily criticized by its Irish audience for portraying the citizenry as drunk and morally lax while the country was seeking its independence. But since that time, this biting dark comedy has become one of the all-time classics of modernist Irish theatre, and the questions it raises about whose stories we believe and how we choose our heroes is interesting to revisit in our current moment.
Please note: This production contains graphic depictions of violence and injury, references to murder and violence, sexual references, complex family relationships and alcoholism.
