The Terminator

DFS: Killer Robots!

The Terminator, HAL9000, Mr. Smith… these iconic embodiments of our fears surrounding artificial intelligence are among cinema's greatest villains.

But how much of our present anxieties around this rapidly evolving technology are based on these nightmare visions of possible futures? Are these sci-fi films offering enough scientific insight to take their projections seriously, or are the imaginative fiction elements now driving the conversation about how this technology should be regulated? This series explores a range of representations of AI on screen, including malicious programs that think they know better, convincingly human androids that blur the lines about what it means to be a person, AI-surveillance systems weaponized against us, and more.
