A genre-defying ensemble that reimagines the classical music experience.

20/21 Hop Presents

Hailed by The New York Times as "invariably energetic and finely burnished," Catalyst Quartet is composed of top laureates and alumni of the internationally acclaimed Sphinx Competition. The Quartet shares excerpts from their "Uncovered" program which features overlooked artists in classical music, including Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, William Grant Still and George Walker. With a passion for communicating deep ideas through their music, Catalyst investigates and honors the forgotten history and roots of classical music.

About Catalyst Quartet

Known for their "rhythmic energy, polyphonic clarity and tight ensemble-playing," Catalyst Quartet includes musicians Karla Donehew-Perez (violin), Jessie Montgomery (violin)*, Paul Laraia, (viola) and Karlos Rodriguez (cello). The ensemble has toured throughout the US and abroad, including sold-out performances at the Kennedy Center, Harris Theater, New World Center and Stern Auditorium at Carnegie Hall. Their debut album The Bach/Gould Project features members' own arrangement of J.S. Bach's monumental Goldberg Variations paired with Glenn Gould's Seminal String Quartet Op. 1. They are featured in multiple album collaborations, including Dreams and Daggers, Cécile McLorin Salvant's tremendous 2-disk Grammy-winning album. Catalyst Quartet has been invited as guest artists at acclaimed musical festivals such as Mozart, The Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival, SITKA Music Festival, Strings Music Festival and the Vail International Dance Festival.

*Please note: Abigail Fayette will be replacing Jessie Montgomery on violin for this performance.
