with Jim Nicola, original producer for “Rent” world premiere
February 25, 2022

This event occurred as part of the 21/22 Theater Department season. This is an archived view.

Join us for a conversation with New York Theatre Workshop's Artistic Director about the making of an icon and what the hit musical means for the American theater.

21/22 Theater Department

In 1994, the brand-new New York Theatre Workshop Residency program at Dartmouth brought an unknown young composer named Jonathan Larson to campus to continue developing a new musical he had been working on for years. Two years later, the show opened at New York Theatre Workshop amidst the unimaginable tragedy of Larson's sudden death … and opened the door to a new era in musical theater. The panel will discuss the making of an icon and what Rent
means for the American theater—past, present and future.

Joining the conversation is Lecturer and Director Carol Dunne; Assistant Professor of Music and Faculty Liaison César Alvarez; and Dramaturg and Masters Candidate in Digital Musics Armond Dorsey GR.
