A bustling, bilingual musical that crisscrosses generations and ripples through the lives of a Cuban immigrant family.

Carlota is a tormenta. Carlota is a fantasma. Carlota is a grandmother, revolutionary, healer and pain in the ass. Through the fantastic story of this whirlwind of a woman and the layered lives of her descendants, we join a journey of love, frustration and the yearning to understand our family histories.

Energetic, playful and potent, this new musical asks: what do we carry forth from our ancestors, what are some forced to abandon, and what do we wish we could leave behind?

Layered portraits of the generations that follow the fierce protagonist Carlota are intercut with infectious songs and choreography. And the spiritual and rhythmic connections between Cuba and the Gulf course through the music.

Based in New Orleans, Goat in the Road is at the vanguard of ensemble-based theater today, known for devising works that explore undertold American stories. Carlota comes to the Hop at a time when the Cuban island is once again gripped by geopolitical forces that affect the lives and futures of its people. Carlota traces one of these imagined lineages, reminding us here at Dartmouth of the stories that need to be heard and the rhythms of resistance we need to feel today.
