How do we perceive ourselves in our stories?
21/22 Theater Departmentcreated by Olivia Powell '17
directed by Liza Couser '17
A presence stands on a hill by the sea. She tries to sing, tries to speak, but she can only hold her story like a memory in her body and look out at the ocean. Born from a performative writing process developed in VR, With words that don't exist is a devised theatrical experience exploring how we perceive ourselves in stories and relate to the characters and presences who move through them.
Olivia Powell (she/her) is a writer, artist and director who wonders what else stories can be and do. Embracing a poetic sensibility, she experiments across narrative forms and creates works that are often described as "the bedtime stories that we forgot to tell." Olivia studied film at Dartmouth College and earned her MA in Digital Direction from the Royal College of Art. In 2020, she was shortlisted for the international Lumen Prize in Art and Technology for a film script co-devised with GPT-2. Olivia is committed to story development processes that aim to be experimental, instinctual, imaginative and accessible.
Liza Couser (she/her) is a director and producer of new plays and musicals based in New York City. She is interested in the complex, comedic, absurd, heart-wrenching, ensemble-driven, collaborative and formally adventurous. Select recent credits: Primetime Theater (Co-Founder & Producer), MEAT (Director, VOX Fest), Cowboy Face (Producer, Dixon Place), Casablanca on The Hudson (Director, Dixon Place). Liza has presented work with Ars Nova, Northern Stage, The Tank, New London Barn Playhouse, 59E59 Theaters, Theater for the New City, BRIC Arts and Dartmouth College. Fellowships: Roundabout Directors Group, SDCF Observership, Ars Nova Artistic Fellowship, 24 Hour Plays Nationals. Learn more about Liza >
