Glimpse and witness "Haint Blu": UBW's latest work, seeped in memory and magic.

21/22 Hop Presents

In this new work, a Hop co-commission, performance becomes a center and source of healing. Urban Bush Women dancers embark on a journey of remembering and restoring the histories and stories of elders and ancestors by engaging in rituals of protection and transcendence. This proscenium version of Haint Blu—developed during the company's residency at Dartmouth this fall—is an embodied look into familial lines and an attempt to recover what has been lost.

Join us as the company previews new moments from Haint Blu as well as excerpts of classic works from their iconic 35th Anniversary program Legacy + Lineage + Liberation, to be performed at the Hop this January. As part of the showing, the company joins in discussion and reflection with guest experts and audience members on Haint Blu's exploratory threads of healing and restorative practices, African cosmology and spirituality, memory and dreams.

Tickets are free, but advance registration is required.

Urban Bush Women (UBW), founded in 1984 by choreographer Jawole Willa Jo Zollar, is a Brooklyn-based performance ensemble and dance company under the artistic direction of Chanon Judson and Samantha Speis. UBW seeks to bring the untold and under-told histories and stories to light through dance from a woman-centered perspective and as members of the African Diaspora community in order to create a more equitable balance of power in the dance world and beyond. UBW has been named one of America's Cultural Treasures by the Ford Foundation and one of 286 organizations "empowering voices the world needs to hear."
