21/22 Youth & FamiliesJoin this interactive experience in celebration of Diwali, India's biggest holiday. Diwali has become a national festival observed by both Hindu and non-Hindu communities that honors the victory of light over darkness.
Bharatanatyam dancer Vid. Nithya Ramesh shares the story and the myth behind the artwork "Rama Attended by Sita and Lakshmana" from the Hood Museum of Art's collection and the piece's connection to Diwali. Then, she demonstrates hand gestures, facial expressions and movements that bring the art to life through dance—and invites you to join in!
No prior dance experience or previous knowledge of Indian culture is required to participate. Please wear clothes that allow you to move freely.
This free workshop takes place over Zoom. Advance registration is required.
Nithya Ramesh has been practicing Bharatanatyam for over two decades and has successfully completed the Vidwath Poorva and Vidwath Antima (advanced scholar level) dance exams conducted by the Karnataka State Secondary Education Board in Bangalore, earning the title "Vidushi." She completed her "Arangetram" in 2007 and since then, as a solo artist, she has gone on to perform over 250 shows globally and has received many accolades for her performances. She is a scholarship recipient from the Karnataka Sangetha Nritya Academy and has been recognized by the Bangalore Fine Arts Appreciation club for her contribution to the field of dance. Nithya was selected as a graded artist for television by the Indian National Television channel - Doordarshan Chandana in 2014. Nithya has also taught Bharatanatyam through her dance school Natyaroha since 2013 and currently teaches in Boston, MA and virtually.
