Johnny Gandelsman in Conversation

Music and Our American Moment

co-presented with Vermont Public and hosted by Vermont Edition's Mikaela Lefrak
February 06, 2024

This event occurred as part of the 23/24 Public Talk season. This is an archived view.

Like radio, Gandelsman's expansive project "This is America" sails across the boundaries of genre and geography. Join us for a live conversation on musical craftsmanship and the approach of various composers to capturing our shared national moment of reckoning.

Johnny Gandelsman

The Hop and Vermont Public invite you to a live discussion that will bring together our musical community, and also be shared across the airwaves with our broader community of listeners. The talk will tackle the original inspiration behind Gandelsman's 24+ work anthology, how creative practice can connect us across isolation, and what we (and the Grammy-winning violinist) hear through the compositions of today's adventurous composers. The recorded discussion will be aired as a future episode of Vermont Edition.

The free talk is part of Gandelsman's year-long residency at the Hop, during which he will perform the entire anthology for the first time, expand the series with three new Hop commissions, and perform four concerts at Dartmouth and four across the region.

Joining the pioneering violinist Johnny Gandelsman will be moderator Mikaela Lefrak and Dartmouth alum Kojiro Umezaki '93 whose Hop-commissioned piece, entitled Breathe, will be performed later that evening.

The talk will be followed by a free and informal reception that leads into the concert.

About Johnny Gandelsman's This is America
In response to the turbulent and disconnected time of the early pandemic and the murder of George Floyd, violinist and member of Silkroad Ensemble Johnny Gandelsman invited a wide array of American or US-based composers to reflect on the current state of society in a personal and intimate way. And so became This is America—an anthology of compelling new works for the virtuoso violinist that celebrates America's rich cultural tapestry. Gandelsman has expanded the original 24-piece anthology with three premieres here at Dartmouth. During each of his four concerts, he will be joined by the composer of each commission to shed light on their work.
