Explore the sequence of Beethoven's ten sonatas for violin and piano with a focus on the "Kreutzer" sonata.
22/23 Public TalkAll but the last of Beethoven's ten sonatas for violin and piano were composed between the years 1798 and 1803—and they thus immediately precede the remarkable period in which the composer produced such epochal works as the "Eroica" symphony, the "Appasionata" piano sonata, and the three opus 59 string quartets. This pre-concert talk will offer a framework for an understanding of the entire sequence of ten violin sonatas, and it will focus in part on the famous opus 47 sonata of 1803—the "Kreutzer" sonata—whose scope and bold originality intimate the composer's extraordinary new creative path.
Composer, conductor, musicologist and music theorist, Dr. Mark Nelson has over 30 years' experience teaching music, guiding performing-arts departments and directing music ensembles. He currently teaches a series of music appreciation seminars at the Upper Valley Music Center, and is Music Director of the Upper Valley Chamber Orchestra, the Upper Valley Community Band, the Lyme Town Band and Harmony Night (an a cappella community chorus). A devotee of interdisciplinary inquiry, he is animated by the notion that a musician is an historian—that performance and understanding are enriched by careful consideration of the aesthetic, socio-political and biographical contexts from which a composition emerges.
