Sally Pinkas and friends

piano quartets with Marcus Placci, Lila Brown and Rhonda Rider
February 10 - 11, 2026

Hop pianist-in-resident and three chamber music friends explore rich, emotionally expansive works by Brahms from his youthful passion to mature mastery.

Brahms' three piano quartets, composed between 1857 and 1875, need no introduction. From the fiery Rondo alla Zingarese of Op. 25, through the broadly lyrical Op. 26 and the darkly dramatic Op. 60, they mine this concise foursome of instruments to its fullest. They are here explored by four consummate chamber music friends and partners from our neighboring New York's Music From Salem Festival.

Following her London debut at Wigmore Hall, pianist Sally Pinkas has garnered universal praise as an eloquent and versatile performer. Among career highlights are performances with the Boston Pops, the Aspen Philharmonia, New York's Jupiter Symphony and Indonesia's Bandung Symphony. Pinkas tours widely as a member of Ensemble Schumann and collaborates often with the Adaskin String Trio and the Apple Hill String Quartet. Pianist-in-residence at the Hopkins Center at Dartmouth College, she is Professor of Music at Dartmouth's Music Department, and a summer faculty at the Apple Hill Center for Chamber Music in New Hampshire.

Violist Lila Brown (viola) is a co-founder and the artistic director of Music from Salem, founded in 1986, and of the MfS Viola Seminar since 2011. A graduate of the Juilliard School, Brown was a member of the Boston Symphony from 1982-84. Moving to Austria, she became principal violist of Sandor Végh's Camerata Academica Salzburg. Brown has been a participant at the Marlboro Music Festival, the Martha's Vineyard Chamber Music Society, Apple Hill Center for Chamber Music, and the Horten Kammermusikkfest in Norway. Brown has been on the faculty of the Vienna Hochschule, professor at the Hochschule in Duesseldorf, and returning to the US in 2009, of The Boston Conservatory at Berklee where she received the 2012 "Outstanding Music Division Faculty of the Year" award.

Markus Placci has appeared in recitals and solo performances in Europe, South America, Asia and the USA, with renown orchestras such as the Barcelona Symphony, Baden-Baden Philarmonie and St. Petersburgh State Philharmonic. Winner of the "Brahms Preis Germany", the "XXVI Vittorio Veneto Competition", and the "Tanglewood Reiner Violin Prize", he was broadcast on the BBC Radio, WGBH, Bartok Radio Hungary and RTVE. He has collaborated with Gil Shaham and Yo-Yo Ma and Toby Hoffmann, gave masterclass at top Universities and Conservatories worldwide, and was awarded the "Boston Conservatory Outstanding Faculty of the Year" and the ASTA "Best Studio Teacher 2016."

For over two decades, cellist Rhonda Rider was a member of the Naumburg Award-winning Lydian Quartet and Triple Helix Piano Trio. An advocate of contemporary music, Rider has premiered and recorded works by composers including Raven Chacon, Yu-Hui Chang, John Harbison, Lee Hyla, Laura Kaminsky and Elliott Carter. Her interest in presenting music in unusual places has led her to be an Artist-in-Residence at both Grand Canyon and Petrified Forest National Parks. Rider has adjudicated at the Fischoff, Stulberg and Concert Artist Guild Competitions. She is Professor of Cello at Boston Conservatory at Berklee where she was twice awarded Teacher of the Year. Rider is heard on over 30 chamber music and solo recordings. www.rhondarider.com
