Teatro La Plaza's 'Hamlet'
Teatro La Plaza's 'Hamlet'
¿Ser o no ser? What does it truly mean "to be" in a world that looks the other way?
Playful, powerful and joyful—a radical reimagining of Shakespeare's Hamlet, featuring eight actors with Down syndrome. Versions of the original text intermingle with personal anecdotes from the cast in a provocative dialogue that brings us face to face with the themes of empathy, exclusion and the irrepressible human spirit. The high-energy performance upends the Shakespearean focus on the individual—here, the melancholic Prince—and instead centers community.
Hailed across its runs at Lincoln Center, Theatre for a New Audience and the Edinburgh International Festival, the pioneering work from Peruvian theater company Teatro La Plaza now lands at the Hop, pulsing with life and classic lessons we desperately need to relearn today.
This event will be performed in Spanish with English supertitles.
This performance contains adult themes and mature language, and features atmospheric haze. Recommended for ages 12 and up.

Teatro La Plaza is a space for theatrical creation that investigates and interprets reality, shaping a critical perspective in dialogue with the community. La Plaza comes from the desire to become a space that democratically gathers its people and, like a mirror, reflects all human events.
The company was established in 2003 to connect with their community by offering a curated selection and production of plays capable of questioning, provoking and surprising. Through contemporary playwriting and classics viewed through a modern lens, Teatro La Plaza productions seek to formulate key questions that allow people to better understand reality, the turbulent times we live in, and the complex nature of humanity.
Their programming is committed to making theater about the issues that concern and move people. They make theater to denounce and to remember, but also to dream of a country where no one feels excluded—a country of empathetic citizens.
